The St. Charles County Ambulance District Honor Guard honors those who lost their lives on Sept 11, 2001, and those who have died after that dreadful day with illnesses acquired from working at the World Trade Center site.
We wanted to pay tribute to all the EMS professionals who responded to the WTC site and paid the ultimate price.
Americans are aware of the huge sacrifice paid by the NYFD, NYPD, and Port Authority Police on Sept 11, 2001. However, not much is said on the sacrifices paid by EMT's and Paramedics who were not from those departments who responded and untimely lost their lives that dreadful day. Just months after Sept 11, 2001 many responders started to have health problems and developed cancers and breathing disorders. Unfortunately as a result of these illnesses, the death toll did not end that day, and many of those brave responders who participated in the rescue and later salvage of the WTC site have succumbed to their afflictions. These personnel are heroes and are listed below.
Deborah Reeve, EMT-P
Brian Ellicott, EMT-P
Lt. Kevin Pfeifer, EMT-P
Timothy Keller, EMT-P
Cynthia Mahoney, EMT
Felix Hernandez, EMT-P
Daniel Stewart, EMT
The following personnel responded to the WTC site, participated in rescue and salvage and are now listed as permanently disabled due to the many cancerous and respiratory aliments now affecting these responders. These personnel are heroes and are listed below.
Bonnie Giebfried, EMT
Scott Beloten, EMT-P
Marvin Bethea, EMT-P
James Dobson, EMT-P
Michael Roberts, EMT-P
There are many more that are not listed here. It is estimated that as many as 50% of the tens of thousands of people who participated at Ground Zero have some type of aliment.
On September 9, 2005, on the South Lawn of the White House, President George W. Bush presented the 9/11 Heroes Medal of Valor to surviving families of the fallen firefighters, police officers, and other public safety officers who were killed in the terrorist attacks in New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia on September 11. The President thanked the families on behalf of the nation for their sacrifice. "A proud America will always stand in the shadow of their service and sacrifice," President Bush told a crowd of about 1,400 family members and friends, each of who wore a name badge honoring their fallen hero.
